It is that time of the year again. When you need the fan working above you, when nimbu paani is favoured over chai. Soon, you will be putting away the synthetic clothes, and you embrace the softness of cotton. Sunscreen becomes your go-to product when you step out, and you bring out the airy chappals out of the closet. Yes, summer is here. And along with it comes a variety of skin issues. Oily skin gets oilier still and dry skin becomes rough and patchy. Apart from that, there are cases of breakouts, pimples, rashes and stubborn acne. However, some easy and effective summer skin care tips can help you take care of your skin better and avoid the usual summer skin problems.
What happens to our skin in summer?
According to Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj, leading dermatologist and founder of Skin and Hair Clinics, summer or warmer temperature demands that your summer skin care regime be tweaked accordingly. The proverbial hot Indian summer can be pretty ruthless on the skin if proper attention is not paid to it. Just like our wardrobes undergo a seasonal change, our skin needs it too.
Too much sun does not do good to your skin. Apart from tanned skin, too much sun exposure is a leading cause of premature ageing. Our skin has a pigment called melanin and when exposed to sun too much, more melanin is formed. This is the reason why prolonged exposure to the sun can change your skin colour or cause tanning. This is the reason why sunscreens are recommended no matter the skin type.
Summer Face Care
Your face is your representation to the world and hence, requires you to take care of it every day of the year. Summer months compel a special skin care regimen – one that is hydrating and keeps it clean and blemish-free. Ensure you clean your face off of the dust and sweat in these hot months. Many people suffer from break-outs and pimples during this time; if you are one of them, wash your face 3-4 times every day. It is not necessary that you use face wash every time, normal water is enough. Exfoliation is another thing that you can do to keep your face clean. In summers, you should use a scrub once or twice a week depending on your skin type; a combination of multani mitti(fullers earth), chandan, rose water and basil is good for acne-ridden skin whereas egg white, lemon, chandan, curd with a pinch of turmeric and besan is good for dry and matured skin.
Use weather-appropriate products
All the thick creams that you were using during the winter months need to be stowed away now. You can use them for very dry areas like your feet, but not other parts of the body. Summer months demand that you let your skin breathe easily and naturally. Go for lighter lotions and serums. Water-based moisturizers are best for normal skin types, gel-based moisturizers for oily skin and facial sprays for extra oily and acne-prone skin. Natural moisturizers like glycerine and rose water can be added to bathing water. Applying plain curd on all dry areas of the body for 10-15 minutes before bath is also very beneficial.
Basics rule
Unlike popular belief, your skin can get dry during summer too. Follow the age-old tradition of cleaning, toning and moisturizing at night before you hit the bed. Sticking to this basic regime is even more important during summers given the effects of UV rays of the sun which cause premature ageing and wrinkles.
Never forget your sunscreen
Do not step out without your sunscreen – that’s the golden rule. Choose a sunscreen that absorbs easily into your skin. A minimum of SPF 30 is recommended and should be applied 20-30 minutes before heading out. Use of sunscreen goes a long way in minimizing sun related spots.
Eyes and lip care
The sun is the harshest between 12.pm and 4 pm during summer months, so avoid stepping out during that time. If you do step out, ensure you protect your eyes by wearing a pair of sunglasses and your lips by applying balm. Since the skin around the eyes is very delicate, it is paramount that you take extra care. Splashing your eyes with clean and cold water helps a lot. Additionally, you can dip cold cotton pads in potato juice and apply.
