Starting With a Bang!A Historic Hockey RunIndia’s Golden Boy Shines AgainSo Close Yet So Far

The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics was a first-of-its-kind extravagant display of music, song, dance and lights, all on the Seine River. The Indian contingent of 112 athletes flew to Paris and went toe-to-toe with the best athletes in the world and made us proud, bagging 6 medals in the process.

India competed in 69 medal events across 16 sports including athletics, hockey, shooting, badminton,

wrestling, boxing, tennis and table tennis, to name a few. Let’s recap our third-best outing at the Olympic Games.

Starting With a Bang!

Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh

Manu Bhaker was the first to bring home a medal, finishing third and clinching the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event, only behind the Republic of Korea’s viral sensations, Oh Ye-jin and Kim Ye-ji. She became India’s first woman to win a medal for shooting at the Olympics.

Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh also won bronze at the mixed team event, beating out the formidable Oh Ye Jin and Wonho Lee 16-10. A second medal made Manu Bhaker the first Indian athlete to win multiple medals in a single edition of the Olympics, since our independence.

Swapnil Kusale’s bronze in the men’s 50m rifle was another feather in our cap. With three podium positions, this was the perfect start and our best showing in a single sport at the Olympics.

A Historic Hockey Run

Indian men's hockey team

The Indian men’s hockey team won bronze, securing back-to-back Olympic podium finishes for the first time since 1972. We also scored a historic win against Australia, marking our first win against them in 52 years.

We beat Spain 2-1 in the bronze medal match to equal our feat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s 10 goals led the charge, while PR Sreejesh had a Paris Olympics to remember before hanging his boots up.

Learning to work as a team and relying on others is crucial for QNET distributors. As a leader, you need to be to motivate those around you when the going gets tough and make them believe in the vision you see. As an entrepreneur, you need to know how to network with people and build a support system that you can trust. With a good team, you can build a legacy of your own.

India’s Golden Boy Shines Again

Neeraj Chopra was the star of the show as he brought silverware home once again with the second-best javelin throw of his entire career, at 89.45m. However, despite his best efforts he couldn’t get the better of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set an Olympic record with a whopping 92.97m throw.

Even though Neeraj outdid his previous showing at the Olympics with a better throw, it is suspected a niggling groin injury might have held him back a bit. He’s made India proud once again by winning a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and cementing himself as a national icon. Check out the highlights from the final below:

Aman Sehrawat also became the youngest Olympic medal winner in Indian history, winning bronze in the men’s freestyle 57kg wrestling event at the young age of 21 years and 24 days.

So Close Yet So Far

Touted as a national prodigy at just 15, all of India had their eyes on Lakshya Sen. He became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the Olympic semi-finals. Despite Sen leading against the Tokyo Olympics champion, Viktor Axelsen, the veteran eventually came out on top. A relentless Lee Zii Jia squashed any hopes of a medal, beating Sen 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

Vinesh Phogat

However, the biggest heartbreak was the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat. Off the back of a year when the media painted her as a villain for her protests, Phogat also had to take drastic measures and reduce from her natural weight of 57kg to under 50kg to compete in the Olympics.

Against all odds, Phogat pulled off one of the biggest upsets in wrestling history, beating Japan’s unbeaten Yui Susaki in the opening round. Having put in all the work to reach the final, Phogat was controversially disqualified from the gold medal match due to being overweight by a mere 100 grams.
